iPod, Apple, mobile accessory, apple accessory, battery pack
- Thorben Neu, Creative Director
Hand-selected by Apple the Belkin design team developed the first line of accessory products for the iPods. Later this effort would expand to the iPhone and other mobile devices competing in an increasingly competitive market. TunePower, A replaceable, rechargeable battery pack, is representative of many accessory products we designed with Belkin.
The design of TunePower was informed by two guiding principles: Recognizability and flexibility. Recognizability as we needed to explain the product visually against an ever decreasing attention span in a crowded market. Flexibility as we needed to make sure that the product could be sustained over several generations of iPods and iPhones.
We visually called out the battery component as a separate volume. This was done for several purposes: firstly it allowed us to identify the product as a battery backup at first glance, something that is very helpful in brick and mortar and online purchase scenarios. Secondly it allowed us to disassociate the sleeve from the battery for maximum flexibility down the line.
The battery backup could be easily adapted to different and new generations of devices. This was done by means of exchangeable sleeves with attachment points for the pack that could be quickly and cheaply developed for new devices as they hit the market. This strategy helped to increase the shelf-life and profitability of the TunePower product.
