what it is

Secure doors in office environments are commonly connected to a remote server rooms for network connectivity. The single door controller lets you do so right at the door allowing offices to integrate single doors or remote doors with Openpath’s system.

challenge

In migrating a product from the server room into public view we needed to keep two audiences in mind: The service professional who values a quick and easy install and service and the rest of us who could care less - unless it messes with the vibe.

We made our job designing the Single Door Controller hard to make the installer’s job supremely easy.

  • The product has been designed to live above the door and recede into an office space when installed. The design is quiet and clean.

The true power of the design lies “under the hood”. We took an installer-centric approach to designing the product, eliminating challenges they commonly run into. This way we dramatically reduced installation time and complexity as compared to common controllers.

  • A common controller box is designed with the electrical engineer in mind.

Installers and end users have not been considered. Complex wiring across different locations on the board and cross referencing from the wire diagram to the connectors make installation slow and cumbersome and service complex.

  • We dramatically reduced complexity in wiring and service by creating a one-to-one alignment between connectors and connected devices (locks and sensors).

Port connections are now exclusive and not shared enabling clear labelling and status lights facilitating trouble shooting.

We removed the need to cross reference wiring diagrams by clearly labelling the ports and terminal blocks down to the wire.

  • We streamlined the user experience through iterative development with installers and service professionals to insure their needs are being met.

Throughout the installation process we manage cables, allow for adjustability and make sure the sensitive components are protected from dust.

The Single Door Controller manages wiring complexity to provide at-a-glance cable organisation. Connections can be recorded right on the color-coded port labels. Cables can be routed into or above the wall to satisfy all common installation scenarios.

  • We carefully designed the keypad reader to harmonise with Openpath’s legacy products.

Size, proportion and key interface elements are arranged on a tight grid to create portfolio consistency.
